The GTA 5 add-on was supposed to tell Trevor’s story
GTA 5 is an undisputed hit. The game sold brilliantly. This does not mean that players have no reasons to complain. One of them is the lack of story additions.
Although GTA 5 sold 200 million copies worldwide, which is an absolutely sensational result, it does not mean that players liked everything.
Many people complained, among other things, about the length of the production’s lifespan and the related waiting time for the next installment (GTA 5 was released on PS3, PS4 and PS5). Additionally, Rockstar Games took flak for the lack of story additions. These were supposed to be built, but money decided.
GTA 5 Add-on
Rockstar Games did not create story-driven add-ons for GTA 5 not because they did not want to, but because the emphasis was on GTA Online, which was bringing the company huge profits. This was revealed by one of the studio’s former employees who worked directly on the expansion. The main role in it was to be played by Trevor, beloved by players.
When GTA Online came out, it became a huge cash cow. People loved it so much that it was hard to argue that a standalone DLC would be able to top that. I think looking back now, I would say that they probably could have done both, but it was a business decision that they made.
– said Joseph Rubino, former Rockstar Games employee.
Rubino admitted that the DLC was about halfway finished when the decision was made to cancel it. However, some of the materials were later used in GTA Online, so it’s not like the work was completely wasted.
As early as 2023, data miners found information that Rockstar Games initially planned three story add-ons for GTA 5. They were to be called Agent Trevor, Zombie Apocalypse, and Alien Invasion. Ultimately, none were created.
