Bendable displays aren’t enough – this LG can stretch
LG Display presented the world’s first truly stretchable display that can expand by as much as 50%, increasing the diagonal of the prototype from 12 to 18 inches. Most importantly, changing the diagonal is carried out without losing the quality of the displayed image.
LG has been working on this solution for years, and in 2020 it already boasted a stretchable display. However, then the diagonal increased by only 20%, now the screen is much more impressive. Such high extensibility is the result of the use of innovative solutions, such as a special silicone material used in contact lenses and a groundbreaking approach to display cabling.
According to the manufacturer, the prototype withstands repeated stretching, up to 10,000 times. times, and the use of 40 micrometer micro-LEDs as a light source ensures consistent image quality, regardless of weather conditions, including even extreme temperatures. The currently usable pixel density is 100 pixels per inch, and the panel also offers 100% reproduction of the RGB palette.
Thanks to their plasticity, the new displays can be used on a variety of curved surfaces, such as clothes or skin. LG expects a wide range of applications, from fashion and wearable electronics to car interiors.
