Stop Killing Games with great success. The EU cannot ignore this
It is worth emphasizing one thing here: it is not about maintaining unprofitable servers or providing continuous support. We are talking about freeing abandoned games by removing some of the DRM protection and enabling the creation of unofficial servers in their case. So that players can enjoy the games they paid for, and at the same time their creators are not forced to forever finance loss-making projects.
Stop Killing Games successfully
This campaign was not only about appealing to the publishers’ better side. Well, a petition was launched in the EU by the European Citizens’ Initiative Stop Destroying Videogames, the aim of which was to collect one million signatures of European Union citizens in order to submit it to the European Commission, which would then consider it.
Well, during the verification process, the petition managed to exceed the threshold of 1.29 million valid signatures. Therefore, if the EU authorities agree with the players’ position, games published in the EU after the official end of their operation, i.e. closing the servers, will have to be transferred to the community of players – of course, those who have previously paid for the product.
It is worth emphasizing that these changes will only apply to games released after the new policy comes into force, as part of the principle that the law does not apply retroactively.
