Sony unveils the new “slim” design of the console

The rumors were right, Sony has just presented a thinner model of the PlayStation 5, with a detachable Blu-ray drive.

With each generation of consoles, Sony has now become accustomed to offering a smaller version after a few years. Here is the new PlayStation 5, smaller, thinner and with an optional Blu-ray player.

A smaller PlayStation 5

The rumors were right, Sony’s enormous console is entitled to a slimming treatment. The volume of the new PlayStation 5 is thus reduced by 30% and its weight lowered by 18 to 24%. This gives approximately 358 × 96 × 216 mm compared to 390 x 104 x 260 mm for the original model. Allow 3.2 kg for the PS5 and 2.6 kg for the Digital Edition, compared to 4.5 and 3.9 kg respectively for the launch versions.

Better yet, the PS5 becomes modular. Its sides are now split in two. The upper, shiny part remains fixed, but the lower, matte part can be removed in order to integrate a Blu-ray player, sold separately at 119.99 euros. Thus, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition can become a PlayStation 5 and vice versa.

Note that the foot to hold the console vertically is now optional and sold for 29.99 euros. Last change: the front panel here displays two USB-C ports instead of a USB-C port and a USB-A port. Make way for modernity!

These new models will be available from November and will replace the current consoles on store shelves. For the price, you will have to pay 450 euros for the Digital Edition version and 550 euros for the PS5 with its Blu-ray player.
