Sony boasts of its results. 92 million PlayStation 5s sold

Sony has published its latest financial report, which brings fresh data on PlayStation 5 sales. By the end of the third quarter of fiscal year 2025, global shipments of the console reached 92.2 million units. This is a clear jump compared to the 84.2 million reported a quarter earlier, but at the same time a signal that the pace of sales is beginning to slow down significantly.

Ghost of Yōtei turned out to be the driving force behind sales

In the third quarter alone, Sony shipped approximately 8 million units. This result is 15.8% worse than in the same period a year earlier. In total, after three quarters of the fiscal year, PlayStation 5 sales amount to 14.4 million units, compared to 15.7 million a year earlier. This represents a decline of 8.3% year-on-year.

Despite everything, the Japanese can sleep soundly. Total sales of PlayStation 5 are still very close to the level of PlayStation 4 at the same point in its life cycle. The previous generation had approximately 94.4 million units sold. However, it is worth remembering that PS5 started in much more difficult conditions, first struggling with the global semiconductor crisis, and now with memory availability problems.

The gaming data is much better. The number of copies sold on PS4 and PS5 increased to 97.2 million units, an increase of 1.4% YoY. First-party productions played a key role here. 13.2 million of these were sold in the quarter, which is as much as 13.8% more than a year earlier.

The driving force behind sales was Ghost of Yōtei from the American studio Sucker Punch Productions, the largest exclusive premiere on PlayStation 5 in 2025. During the earnings conference call, Sony CFO Lin Tao confirmed that the game outsold Ghost of Tsushima in the comparable period after its release.

Such good results practically guarantee further development of the game. There are more and more indications that Sony will give the green light for DLC for Ghost of Yōtei, which has already been suggested by the developers themselves. The premiere of the Legends online cooperative mode is also scheduled for 2026. Unofficially, it is said that its debut may coincide with the release of the game on PC.
