Samsung is preparing new, ultra-fast SSD drives
Samsung has registered two new trademarks. Thanks to this, we learned that the Koreans are preparing to release NVMe PCIe 5.0 SSD drives.
The new trademarks were noticed at the Korean office that deals with it. They clearly suggest that Samsung is preparing at least two new NVMe SSDs, probably both using the PCIe 5.0 interface. We also know how the company will reset the names of its semiconductor media.
New Samsung SSDs
Samsung has registered two new trademarks – 990 EVO Plus and 9100 PRO. Both series will probably use the PCIe 5.0 interface, which has been missing in the Korean brand’s offer for now. It is true that the 990 EVO models (without Plus) are compatible with PCIe 5.0, but only in the x2 version, so they achieve the same speeds as PCIe 4×4. Therefore, these models should be much faster than their predecessors.
The 9100 PRO designation may be surprising, but it’s probably Samsung’s idea to reset the nomenclature of its SSD drives. The company hit a wall with the 990 series and apparently didn’t want to offer customers models from the 1000 line. I suspect that instead each subsequent generation will be marked as 9100, 9200, 9300, etc. Until we reach 9900 again and another change will be necessary.
The fastest NVMe PCIe 5.0 SSDs today offer read speeds of 14.5 GB/s and 12.7 GB/s when writing data.
