Samsung has created a new screen. Phytoplankton instead of plastic

Housing made of marine organisms

Samsung announced the global premiere of the 13-inch Color E-Paper model EM13DX. It is the first device of this type in the world with a housing made of bioresin derived from phytoplankton. The manufacturer boasts that this material allows for a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions in the production process.

The UL certification organization has verified the composition of the new display’s casing. It consists of 45% recycled plastic and 10% phytoplankton-based bioresin. Replacing traditional petroleum-based plastics allowed us to reduce the carbon footprint of production by over 40%. The product packaging is made entirely of paper.

A digital replacement for A4 paper

The new model is the smallest device in the Color E-Paper series. Its dimensions and proportions are similar to a standard A4 sheet of paper. The screen offers a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels with an aspect ratio of 4:3.

The device was designed as an alternative to posters and leaflets in stores or offices. The structure is 17.9 mm thick and weighs 0.9 kg including the battery. This makes it easier to install on shelves, counters or doors. Special image processing algorithms are intended to provide an appearance similar to traditional printing by smoothing tonal transitions.

Energy only when refreshing

A key feature of e-paper technology is the way it manages energy. The display does not consume electricity when presenting a static image. Energy consumption only occurs when the content changes. This allows for long operation without constant connection to the power supply.

The EM13DX model has a built-in battery and a USB-C port. The device is operated remotely. Employees can change the displayed content using a mobile application for Android and iOS. The display also works with Samsung’s VXT cloud platform for managing a fleet of devices.

The next step in the development of this technology will be the premiere of the 20-inch model. Samsung announced its presentation at ISE 2026 in Barcelona in early February. Currently, Samsung holds over 36% of the global commercial display market share.
