Russia will build on the Moon. She took China into partnership
It is no surprise that Russia and China want to build a research base on the Moon. However, now it has been revealed how it will be powered.
The superpowers of the space industry do not hide their plans for the Moon. Both China and the United States want more than that send a man to the surface of the Silver Globe, but in the longer term also to create conditions for living and conducting research there in the form of habitats. Therefore, a lot of preparations need to be made. China wants to power its base with harvested energy as a result of the operation of a nuclear reactor.
Nuclear reactor on the Moon
One of the biggest challenges in creating lunar habitats is to provide conditions that will support life. Bases will need a lot of energy to survive. Where to get it? China and Russia want to use a nuclear reactor.
Cooperation between Roscosmos and the China National Space Administration is nothing new. Back in 2021, institutions revealed that they intended to build a common base on the Moon called the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), which they claim will be “open to all interested” countries and international partners.
Recently, Roscosmos issued another statement in which it announced that Together with CNSA, they will attempt to create a nuclear reactorwhich will potentially be able to power their research station.
Today we are seriously considering the project – sometime at the turn of 2033-2035 – of delivering and installing an energy unit on the surface of the Moon together with our Chinese colleagues
Roscosmos Director General Yuri Borisov told Russian state news service TASS.
Yuri Borisov, director of Roscosmos, revealed that the construction of the reactor will take place without physical human participationand the technological solutions necessary to do this “are almost ready.”
