As we wrote on Telepolis, One of the largest car companies in the world, General Motors, decided to close the Cruise project. After 8 years and investing as much as $10 billion in robotaxi, the giant admitted that it was unable to make money on this market. He closed the entire project and transferred some of the employees who remained in the company to work on a driver’s assistant in classic cars.

According to Business Insider, this means that the competition in this market, at least in the United States, has practically shrunk to two companies. Alphabet’s company is currently leading the autonomous driving market Waymo. The Google family company already offers rides in several American cities. It will soon become real competition for it Tesla. It is true that Elon Musk’s company is not actively operating on the market yet, but it is expected to introduce its robotaxi next year. With relatively low production costs of around $25,000, Musk promises to dominate this market in a very short time.

Everything indicates that General Motors’ decision confirms that other companies on this market (Tesla and Waymo) have much more advanced technology and are therefore ahead of the competition. This market may actually be closed to new players.

– analyzed by automotive expert John Murphy from BofA.

His opinion is confirmed by Gene Munster from Deepwater Asset Management, a company that analyzes over 2,000 startups from the tech industry:

We look at these companies and do not see anyone on the market trying to compete in the autonomous vehicle industry. This ship has already sailed. The market will be dominated by one of the three: Tesla, Waymo or Amazon.

Tesla, Waymo and Amazon

Waymo already offers rides in several American cities. Data that Waymo has not officially confirmed shows that it already provides almost 100,000 rides a week.

Both Amazon What Tesla they plan to launch their offer at the beginning of next year. Owned by Amazon Zoox is scheduled to debut in Las Vegas and San Francisco.

The Chinese also have the opportunity to use autonomously driving taxis. Baidu is the market leader there. According to Munster, the American market is much more technologically advanced and the company that conquers it can become a global leader in this industry.
