HDMI 2.2 coming soon

After the HDMI 2.1 standard was introduced in November 2017, it’s time for a change. As reported by various industry portals, including Engadget and Flatpanels, which received an e-mail from the HDMI Forum introducing new image transmission standards, On January 6, 2025, the HDMI Forum will provide the latest information related to HDMI 2.2.

The latest version of the HDMI 2.1b standard is characterized by data transfer up to 48 GBps, 8K image support at 60 Hz or 4K at 120 Hz with VRR and HDR10/Dolby Vision. It also supports technologies such as ALLM (automatic gaming mode), eARC for Dolby Atmos audio over HDMI and many others. New generation consoles are equipped with HDMI 2.1 ports: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, as well as selected Nvidia Geforce 3000/4000 series and AMD Radeon 6000/7000 graphics cards.

HDMI 2.2 will have to offer something truly unique to stand out in a market where the DisplayPort 2.1 standard used in PCs supports data transfer rates of 80 Gbps.

The introduction of the new HDMI standard will also make TVs available on the market more capable, as many manufacturers who do not immediately adopt HDMI 2.2 will switch to HDMI 2.1 (which is still not standard on cheaper TVs). This will benefit primarily consumers who will not have to spend large amounts of money to have a TV suitable for gaming, with a 120 Hz matrix, VRR support or automatic game mode.

It is not known what new features HDMI 2.2 will introduce compared to version 2.1 of the standard, but it is worth noting that the jump between HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 was huge.

We will get more information on January 6, 2025, and it is worth noting that devices with HDMI 2.2 ports do not necessarily have to be available immediately and it may take some time before this happens. Realistically, the earliest devices can be expected in late 2025.
