Putin does not give up on his dreams. He gave his people clear instructions
Vladimir Putin does not give up on his dream. The Russian leader wants to have his own gaming console, and his subordinates are doing everything to achieve this goal.
In March this year, Vladimir Putin issued an order to his subordinates. By mid-June, they were to develop a plan for the development of the Russian gaming sector. One of its main elements is to be a new console, which will be based entirely on local solutions (as if Russia had any choice in this matter). How is the plan going?
Putin wants his PlayStation
The project is to be supervised by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin himself, but the development of the plan has been entrusted to Anton Alikhan, who is the Minister of Industry and Trade. By June 15, they were to present the concept of creating and organizing the production of stationary and portable consoles, as well as creating an operating system and a cloud system that would make games available to Russian players.
Does this plan even have a chance of success? It is true that there are already three cloud gaming services in Russia – VK Play, MTS Fog Play and Yandex Plus Gaming, so there should be no problems here.
It’s different with consoles. These, if they are ever created, will have no chance of being as good as PlayStation, Xbox or Switch. Both Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo rely on the latest technologies that cost hundreds of millions of dollars to develop. Russia does not have access to them, and relying on domestic solutions is a simple way to create rubbish.
Moreover, there is no point in fooling yourself, even if Russia finds millions of dollars to create the console, a large part of this amount will probably go to the pockets of politicians and officials. This is one of the reasons why the creation of something like a Steam Deck or even a set-top box for a TV is being considered, but even here it is difficult to predict success for Russia.
