Poles have been able to reserve their PESEL numbers for several months. 5 million people have already decided to take such a step. Thanks to this, we are protected, e.g. in the event of a data leak, because fraudsters will not take out a loan or credit from us. However, it is also associated with certain limitations, as PKO BP reminds us.

PKO BP regarding blocking the PESEL number

PKO Bank Polski has prepared a list of the most important questions and answers regarding blocking the PESEL number. Anyone who has already done it or is planning to do it should familiarize themselves with the most important concepts. The information will also be useful for those who do not want to reserve their PESEL number, because it may convince them to change their mind.

How to block your PESEL number?

This can be done online in the mObywatel 2.0 application or on the mObywatel.gov.pl website. Another alternative is the municipal office.

What products will not be available after registering your PESEL number?

PKO BP reminds that some products and services cannot be used with a reserved PESEL number. It’s about:

  • opening an account
  • borrowing money
  • opening of electronic banking
  • withdrawing an amount higher than three times the minimum wage at a bank branch on the same day (the transaction will be blocked for 24 hours)

At the same time, it is worth remembering that you can withdraw your reservation at any time, submit, for example, an application for a loan or open an account, and after the entire process, block your PESEL again.

What about co-owners of the account?

If you want to open an account for two people, it will not be possible if one of them has a blocked PESEL number. However, in the case of withdrawal of money from a shared account, the objection is checked only in the case of the person making the withdrawal.

When we withdraw more than three times the minimum wage at bank branches, we check the PESEL number reservation status only of the co-holder of the account who withdraws cash. If the account co-holder does not have a reserved PESEL number, he or she may withdraw cash in any amount up to the amount of money available in the account. If the cash is paid by a proxy, we check the PESEL number of the co-owners of the account – not the proxy.
