Nintendo launched a rocket. Switch 2 is selling faster than expected
Nintendo has released its financial results for the third quarter of fiscal 2025, and it looks like the debut of the Nintendo Switch 2 will make history for the company. The new console has already found 17.37 million buyers, even though it hit stores only on June 5, 2025. The start was record-breaking, but the pace of sales in the following months only confirmed the scale of success.
The Japanese can talk about one of the best periods in history
A quarter earlier, the Japanese announced the result of 10.36 million copies. This means that over 7 million consoles were sold in just three months. Of course, the Christmas shopping rush played the first violin here. The earlier forecast of 19 million units sold by the end of the fiscal year, i.e. by the end of March, looks very conservative today. With the current trend, the 20 million copies barrier can be crossed without much effort.
Interestingly, the previous generation is still doing very well. The classic Nintendo Switch sold 3.25 million units in the last quarter, even though it is already 9 years old. This brought the total to more than 155 million units, making it officially the best-selling console in the company’s history, overtaking the Nintendo DS with 154 million.
Game sales results are equally solid. The launch title Mario Kart World has already achieved 14.03 million copies sold, including console bundles. Donkey Kong: Bananza reached 4.25 million copies, and Kirby Air Riders boasts 1.76 million.
The only downside in the report is the decline in IP revenues, i.e. licenses and intellectual property. There was a decline of 10.1% year on year, mainly due to weaker film revenues. However, the situation is about to change quickly, because The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will hit theaters on April 1.
Despite this minor setback, Nintendo’s finances look great. Net revenue almost doubled from last year to $12.25 billion, and operating profit increased 21.3% to $1.93 billion. If the subsequent quarters maintain this course, the Japanese can talk about one of the best periods in their history.
