Nintendo is in a huge slump. Time for a new console
Nintendo has released its financial results for the first quarter of 2025 (fiscal). The data is absolute and shows that it’s time for a new console.
Nintendo has released its latest financial results for the period from April 1 to June 30, 2024. For the company, this is the first quarter of 2025 (fiscal, not calendar). The data is not good, but that’s probably no surprise, considering that the Nintendo Switch is already 7 years old. It’s high time to show the world a new console.
Nintendo in a big hole
During the aforementioned three months, Nintendo sold only 2.1 million consoles, which is a 46% drop compared to the same period a year earlier. Total net sales fell 46.5% to 246.6 million yen, down from 461.3 million yen a year earlier. Operating profit is down 70.6%, and regular profit is down 55.3%.
It all really comes down to the Nintendo Switch console, which has been on the market for 7 years now. Almost everyone who wanted to buy it has already done so. The rest are probably waiting for the premiere of the new model. Therefore, sales of the regular version dropped by 18.4 percent, the Lite model by as much as 56.1 percent, and the OLED version by 46.3 percent. This clearly shows that the time has come for a new generation, which — if rumors are true — will hit store shelves in early 2025.
The games themselves are also important. Nintendo’s biggest hits this quarter were Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD. While these are great games, they are far from Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which debuted a year earlier.
