Netflix to pay compensation to Spanish drug smuggler

Spanish drug smuggler Laureano Oubiña has won a court case against Netflix, forcing the giant to remove a sex scene from the popular series “Cocaine Coast.”

He wanted 1.5 million euros, he will get 15 thousand euros

Oubiña claimed in his lawsuit against Netflix that the company had portrayed him in a negative light in its production, which had caused him “moral damage.” Ultimately, the court ordered him to pay 15,000 euros for violating Oubiña’s privacy and for removing a erotic scene from the first episode of the series. What was in it?

It was about potency

The series “Cocaine Coast” tells the story of a young fisherman who becomes a cocaine smuggler in the 1980s in Galicia (northwestern Spain). In one of the episodes Oubiña was portrayed as incapable of having sexual intercourse with his wife during a conjugal visit in prison.

According to Jorge Paladino, representing the injured party, his client’s life “has deteriorated significantly” since the series aired, due to his portrayal as “a person capable of killing another human being” and as “a brutal, sexist, cocaine smuggler, impotent, malicious, unfaithful, bad father, bad husband, brute, fool, vindictive, abusive towards women, ignorant and a mafioso.”

However, apart from the complaint of invasion of privacy, the court rejected all the arguments of Oubiña’s lawyer.. The ruling may still be appealed. Netflix representatives declined to comment on the ruling.

This is one of many lawsuits against Netflix.

Many more people are unhappy with the exaggerated dramatization of events in Netflix’s films and series. In June, Fiona Harvey filed a lawsuit, claiming that the character of Martha in the popular series “Reindeer” was based on her, which allegedly ruined her reputation. A similar move was made by the family of Colombian drug queen Griselda Blanco, who accused the platform of using their images and likenesses without proper authorization in the series “Griselda.”
