Netflix may be in trouble. The police are searching the offices
Netflix’s French and Dutch offices were searched this week by police and representatives of tax inspection authorities. Could Netflix be in trouble?
Netflix under the microscope of the local tax office
All due to a tax fraud case ongoing since 2022that the streaming giant allegedly committed in these countries.
Parguet National Financier (PNF) is a special French unit dealing with cases of large international corporations that may have committed financial and tax crimes. Netflix appeared on its radar several years ago due to low tax payments compared to the number of the company’s customers. Between 2019 and 2020, Netflix paid only one million euros in taxes to the French budget. Meanwhile, in 2020 alone, according to Reuters reports, the company generated revenue of EUR 47 million in France. A year later, this amount had already grown to over EUR 1.2 billion.
The French investigation, which is also assisted by the Dutch tax authorities, is not an isolated case. In 2022, Netflix reached a settlement with Italian body of justice, paying a fine of EUR 55.8 million.
