More autonomous and efficient… Apple would prepare several Macs by the end of the year

On the sidelines of its September keynote, Apple would hold an autumn event dedicated to the presentation of the future M3 chip. A SoC that the firm is already testing internally on several devices… including a new Mac mini. However, we would have to wait until 2024 to see the color.

Unsurprisingly, Apple would not have said its last word on the Mac mini. After the launch, at the beginning of the year, of a model equipped with the Apple M2 processor, we learn this week of WCCFTech that the Californian giant would be testing a new variant of the device, this time equipped with the future M3 chip. As a reminder, the latter should be unveiled in October or November, during a dedicated event.

According to Mark Gurman, journalist for Bloomberg often well informed, this new Mac mini M3 currently tested would be equipped with the same number of CPU and GPU cores as the M2 model “ basic», i.e. 8 CPU cores (4 high energy efficiency and 4 high performance) and 10 GPU cores. This test model would also carry 24 GB (a capacity already offered as an option on current models).

Clearly, the main novelty would therefore be the switch to the M3 chip itself. And with it, the promise of increased performance and once again fine-tuned energy control.

Apple M3: the Mac mini would be equipped with it… but it would obviously not be the only one

The M3 chip will indeed be made from the “new» TSMC’s 3 nm engraving process (compared to 5 nm currently). This transition to increased fineness of engraving should notably make it possible to boost the autonomy of future MacBooks, to further reduce the consumption of the next Mac mini and iMac (among others), and this while offering more power on the CPU and GPUs.

It will however be necessary to wait a little longer before having a first idea of the gain that this could represent compared to the current M2 chip. The arrival of the M3 chip on the next MacBook Pro would, on the other hand, result in one or two hours of additional autonomy according toWCCFTech.

This brings us to the devices under M3 processors that Apple would launch at the end of the year. Also according to the specialized site, Apple would initially bet on a new 13.6-inch MacBook Air, a new 13-inch MacBook Pro and a new iMac. Recently revised, the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros, as well as the Mac mini, would only benefit from the M3 chip at the beginning of 2024. We will see in the coming weeks if these hypotheses are confirmed.
