Mitsubishi, Nissan and Honda. The Japanese trio will collaborate
Mitsubishi Motors, Honda Motor and Nissan Motor will cooperate. News from Japan speaks of a strategic partnership.
The car brands have been linked for a long time, but that doesn’t mean they worked together. News straight from Tokyo, however, speaks of cooperation, although representatives of the companies are silent. We also know that thanks to the strategic cooperation, the trio will sell more than 8 million vehicles a year.
It’s all about software
It is worth noting that Nissan had worked with Honda before. Mitsubishi, in turn, is 34% owned by Nissan, but the ownership of shares did not translate into close cooperation (although both brands work with the French Renault). Nor into success – Nissan is losing popularity in the most important markets, namely the US and China. Mitsubishi and Nissan have just undergone restructuring, which helped them regain freedom of action.
The carmakers have not yet worked out the details of their partnership. All we know is that they intend to primarily standardize the control software in their vehicles. Nissan and Honda have previously announced cooperation in the production of components for electric vehicles and in building artificial intelligence models for the automotive industry, so this is not a big surprise.
The cooperation is to help the Japanese reduce costs. This in turn should translate into a stronger position in the race against electric vehicles from China. The huge market of the Middle Kingdom is crucial for the Japanese automotive industry, but the competition is not letting up. In Europe, we will probably not feel the change as strongly.
