A painting painted by AI under the hammer for a staggering sum

Everyone expected that the first painting by a humanoid robot would fetch at most around $180,000. Meanwhile “AI God,” a portrait of Alan Turing by Ai-Da, the first robot artist, fetched a staggering $1.32 million.

This painting was sold at one of the New York auctions and was very popular, with a total of 27 offers for it. “This is a milestone in the history of contemporary art and a reflection of the increasingly intersecting trends between artificial intelligence and the art market.” – Sotheby’s auction house wrote in a statement.

Ai-Da is the result of the work of Aidan Meller, a specialist in modernism and contemporary art, who collaborated with artificial intelligence scientists from the universities of Oxford and Birmingham. She resembles a woman and her name was chosen in honor of Ada Lovelace, considered the first female programmer in history.

The creator of the painting says about her work that she hopes it will serve as a medium for discussion about emerging technologies. “A Portrait of Pioneer Alan Turing invites audiences to reflect on the divine nature of AI and the power of computational operations while considering related topics of ethics and the impact of this technology on society,” Ai-Da said.
