Polish archaeologists are conducting excavations in Papowo Biskupi. So far, over 550 metal objects have been found, and dating indicates that they date back to the Bronze Age.
Papowo Biskupie is currently a small village in Chełmno County, Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. However, it is extremely important in archaeological terms. Within Sacred Lake project archaeologists located a cluster of metal artifacts in Papowo Biskupi. Excavations were carried out throughout 2023 on the site of a former glacial lake, which dried up in the 19th century and is currently used by farmers.
As a result of the activities of archaeologists About 550 artifacts from the Bronze Age were excavated. Carbon dating from C14 helped establish their origins in the years 600-500 BC. In addition, the remains of 33 people were found, both children and adults of both sexes. However, the bones are much older. It has been determined that they date from 1040-780 BC
Most of the excavated artifacts are jewelry in the form of rings, necklaces and bracelets, although deer antler products were also found. It is worth noting that the remains do not indicate any bludgeoning or chopping injuries, but archaeologists say they probably did ritual offeringse. Moreover, such a difference between the age of human remains and metal products suggests that we are witnessing a transitional period when the Lusatian culture, under the influence of other cultures, replaced human sacrifices with sacrifices made of metal objects.
