Korea confirms. GDDR7 development is going according to plan
We will soon see another performance leap in the graphics card market. This time, the new VRAM memory standard will add its two cents.
One of the key elements of every graphics card is VRAM. Its capacity and performance determine how quickly and how much information can be transferred to the GPU. Currently, there are three large producers on the market – the American one Micron and South Korean Samsung and SK hynix.
The Koreans will offer better specifications
It so happens that the last of the mentioned companies has revealed some secrecy about the next generation, i.e GDDR7 chips. As reported by AnandTech, mass production of SK hynix systems is scheduled to start in Q1 2025. Means slight slippage compared to the competitionwhich wants to deliver its systems already in Q4 2024.
Koreans announce bones of memory of Father capacity from 16 to 24 GBspeeds up to 40 Gbps and bandwidth up to 160 GB/s. This is supposed to be the main advantage compared to the offer of Micron and Samsung, which start with much worse specifications – up to 16 Gb and 32 Gbps.

The first company to use the GDDR7 standard will be NVIDIA. The new memories will go to selected systems GeForce RTX 5000 aimed at both desktop computers and laptops. However, this will apply to higher-positioned, more efficient and more expensive models.

Of course, not only gamers will benefit from GDDR7, but also the automotive industry and HPC and artificial intelligence machines. Especially since the production of GDDR7 is much simpler and cheaper than HBM.
