It will be even more expensive than we thought. Guilty earthquake in Taiwan
Experts predicted that the prices of SSD drives will increase by up to 15 percent this year. However, there was one thing they didn't take into account – the earthquake that recently hit Taiwan. In fact, it may be even worse.
We recently reported that the prices of SSD drives will probably increase by up to 25 percent this year. in the case of enterprise models and approximately 10-15 percent. when it comes to consumer variants. However, the reality may be even worse, and the recent earthquake that hit Taiwan is to blame.
SSD prices
Experts predicted that SSD prices would increase mainly due to lower supply. Manufacturers began to limit production to get rid of the outstanding units and thus return to normal prices. However, no analysis predicted that Taiwan would experience the country's worst earthquake in 25 years, and yet this is where many DRAM factories are located.
In fact, shortly after the earthquake, Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix stopped reporting prices for DRAM contracts for the second quarter of 2024. This suggests that there may be even greater increases than expected, although it is currently unknown to what extent the natural disaster affected production.
The good news is that the epicenter of the quake was in the eastern part of Taiwan, and most of the factories are located in the west. This does not change the fact that production had to be suspended for some time, which always means losses for producers.
