It was supposed to be a revolution in TV. The last manufacturer abandoned these models

The end of the 8K era by LG

LG, the last major player offering 8K OLED TVs, is officially withdrawing from the market. This market niche has long struggled. These were prohibitive prices and no native content at this resolution. Despite this, several manufacturers tried to keep the segment alive, and even PlayStation 5 Pro received 8K support – without much impact on sales, because in fact only 7 games offered such a resolution, 5 of them through total tricks, and only 2 natively.

LG was the only company that offered both TVs 8K OLEDWhat 8K LCD. The OLED Z series started in 2019 with the 88-inch Z9 model, later expanded to include 77-inch variants and refreshed annually until Z3which remained on offer until 2025. That’s it The Z3 was the last 8K OLED available globallybefore being officially retired without a successor.

In the background, there was even an industry dispute over what was “real 8K”. LG promoted its panels as “Real 8K”contrasting them with Samsung TVs, which used sub-pixel tricks to improve viewing angles at the expense of effective resolution. But now it doesn’t matter anymore – LG Display has suspended the development of 8K OLED panelsdeclaring only their readiness to return if the market ever recovers.

The situation is also certain on the LCD side. LG introduced its first 8K LCD in 2019, expanded the offer in 2021, but then began to gradually phase it out. The last model, QNED99Twas only available in selected regions and was finally discontinued in early 2026.

Meaning that the 8K OLED market no longer exists at all (Sony left it earlier), and the 8K LCD TV market shrank to one manufacturer. After Panasonic, Philips, TCL and Hisense withdrew from this segment, only Samsung still offers an 8K LCD TV. However, the future plans of the Korean company in this matter are not entirely clear, because the corporation is focusing more and more on QD‑OLED and new backlight technologies, rather than further developing 8K.
