We can find smart devices everywhere

As reported by The Guardian, British consumer group Which? discovered that everyday items such as household appliances, watches, and digital speakers are “filled with locators.” Should we give up our privacy for the convenience of using them?

How can one not be afraid of excessive surveillance, if even… popular air fryers collect our personal data. The organization tested three types of fryers, most commonly used in British kitchens. Each device asked for permission to record audio on the user’s phone using a connected app. Smart fryers allow you to plan the start of cooking a meal before the cook returns home. Those that have this function use an application installed on the phone. Which? discovered that the two companies’ applications connect to Facebook and TikTok. Tested devices sent people’s data to servers in China, despite privacy statements.

The situation was similar in the case of some digital speakers and smartwatches. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said the latest consumer testing clearly shows that:

Many products not only do not meet our expectations in terms of data protection, but also the expectations of consumers.

There will be no new rules

So what should you do? Well, set some rules. Therefore, the ICO is developing new guidelines for manufacturers of smart devices. They are intended to clearly set expectations about what needs to be done to comply with data protection regulations and protect people using smart devices. Publication is planned for spring 2025.
