Huge layoffs at Riot Games. The industry was in a state of panic
The gaming industry, although it makes a lot of money, is not a promised land at all. There have been massive layoffs over the last year, with Riot Games now joining the ranks.
Riot Games announced mass layoffs in the company. As many as 530 people will lose their jobs, which is 11%. all employees. The developer explains this as a difficult situation. The costs of running the company became so high that Riot Games could not afford further risks and the possibility of failure of some projects.
Layoffs at Riot Games
The layoffs will primarily affect Riot Forge, which worked with external developers on games in the League of Legends world. This is how productions such as Song of Nunu or The Mageseeker were created. Both received decent ratings, but were clearly not very profitable for Riot Games.
In addition, the team responsible for the Legends of Runeterra card game will be reduced. The company intends to focus on its most important games, i.e. League of Legends, Valorant, Teamfight Tactics, as well as the upcoming fighting game known as Project L. The developer promises even more events, modes and additions to these productions.
Due to Riot Games’ announcements, it is not known what will happen to the much-announced MMO RPG in the world of League of Legends.
Riot Games will provide support to all dismissed employees, including 6-month severance pay, assistance in looking for new employment, and even give them company equipment in the form of peripherals and laptops.
In total, gaming companies laid off as many as 6,500 people last year. The beginning of 2024 and Riot Games’ decision may herald the next 12 months, during which the number of employees will systematically decrease.
