Roundabouts are one of the safest and optimal solutions when it comes to intersecting roads. However, many drivers still find circular intersections problematic. Not only do they not know which lane they should be in at a given moment, but they also cannot use their turn signals correctly. The court issued a decision on this last issue.

How to use turn signals at a roundabout?

The case went to court due to the driving test that was conducted at the Małopolska Road Traffic Center in Krakow – informs Dziennik Gazeta Prawna. It ended with a negative result for the candidate driver, precisely because of the way he used turn signals at the roundabout.

The examiner ordered me to turn left at the roundabout. The examinee first turned on the left turn signal for a moment when entering the intersection, and then turned on the right turn signal when leaving it. According to the examiner, this was inappropriate behavior. The exam ended with a negative result due to:

failure to properly signal intended maneuvers on the road, i.e. failure to turn on the left turn signal while passing through the intersection, i.e. when the examinee did not leave the roundabout but continued driving on the roundabout until the right turn signal was turned on, signaling the intention to leave the intersection through the exit indicated by the complainant from the intersection.

The candidate for a driver did not like the decision and the case was first brought to the Marshal of the Małopolska Voivodeship, who invalidated the exam. The decision was upheld by the Local Government Appeals Court. The next step in the matter was the Provincial Administrative Court in Kraków.

The judge also found that the examiner’s decision was not justified. According to the court, there is no legal basis to order the turn signal to be turned on when entering a roundabout, because it is impossible to change the driving direction anyway, so there is no need to warn other drivers about it. The exception is the exit from the roundabout itself and changing lanes at circular intersections with more than one lane.

The judgment is not final. The case will probably be considered by the Supreme Administrative Court.
