Google will muzzle your smartphone. It will be harder

Do you ever install applications from outside the Play Store on your phone or tablet? Are you downloading APK files from unknown sources? Well, Google wants to make your life significantly more difficult in the name of security.

Android with a muzzle

This is part of the previously announced changes. Google warned that from 2026, every Android application developer will have to register. It’s not just about those who make their apps available in the Play Store. The same applies to those who upload them to external websites or markets, e.g. in the form of an APK file. Lack of registration meant that no one would be able to install the application.

Over time, Google has softened its approach somewhat. Ultimately, the company agreed to allow advanced users (I don’t know what exactly the tech giant has in mind) to be able to install unverified applications.

What about regular users? Not only will they not be able to install unverified applications, but installing those from outside the Play Store will also be much more difficult. First, you may need to be connected to the internet to verify the developer. Secondly, Android will display several messages warning you about the risks and possible consequences. Ultimately, it will be possible to install the application, but it will require more steps.

Google wants to have its cake and eat it too. On the one hand, it is about proper protection of less advanced users who are often victims of fraud or install dangerous applications that steal their data. On the other hand, the company wants to partially preserve Android’s openness, but limit it only to users who really know it.

Ultimately, most users who only use the Play Store will not notice any difference.
