From this year, Netflix will broadcast matches on Christmas Day

Netflix has announced that it intends to broadcast two matches this Christmas. This is a sign that something new is coming. The platform continues to expand its efforts to add a larger list of live programming to its offerings.

Netflix with live matches for the holidays

Netflix got the rights to broadcast two National Football League games. The platform will also feature at least one game on Christmas Day in 2025 and 2026. All this will take place as part of an exclusive three-season deal.

This deal is the first in which Netflix has licensed the rights to show one of the biggest sports leagues in the world and will be the first time it will show a live football match.

There are no annual live events, sports or otherwise, that can compare to the audience that NFL football attracts

– said Netflix's head of content, Bela Bajaria

The company did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction. According to “Bloomberg News”, Netflix will pay less than $150 million for one match.

Let us remind you that the NFL is the most watched sports league in the USA. And the Super Bowl event is unrivaled when it comes to viewership. This year's Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Francisco 49ers game drew a record 123.7 million viewers.

Not just matches on Netflix

Netflix has recently turned to live events and sports to retain its users and further develop its advertising business. He recently broadcast live the tennis match between Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz.

Netflix isn't just experimenting with sports, it's buying it

– said Ross Benes, an analyst from Emarketer
