One of the French energy companies, Schneider Electric, was attacked by hackers. They are trying to extract over $100,000 from the giant, but not in cash but in… bread. The perpetrators of the attack demand an exorbitant amount of French baguettes as ransom.
Schneider Electric is a company that is a leader in the field of digital transformation of automation. As a result of the attack, hackers came into possession of approximately 40 GB of data, including confidential information about projects and over 400,000 user data records. The criminals say they will not make the data public if their demands are met. It must be admitted that the case is unusual, as it is one of the strangest ransom demands in history. The sum in question is USD 125,000, which is to be paid in the form of a specific piece of bread. The price of one baguette is less than 1 euro, so we can imagine that the company would have to provide the hackers with over 100,000 baguettes. It’s hard to imagine such an amount.
Cybercriminals have also filed promotional offer to the attacked company. In exchange for admitting to the data breach, the value of the requested ransom would drop to $62,000, still in baguettes.
It is not known how the whole case will end and what exactly it is about. We also do not know whether the company will decide to pay the ransom in the requested form. One thing is clear – Schneider Electric is thoroughly investigating the entire data breach case.
