The government is preparing a lot of changes for drivers. Some of them concern candidates who just want to obtain qualifications. If the proposals come into force, people as young as 17 will be able to get behind the wheel. True, under the supervision of an older driver, but still. Experts believe this is an ill-considered proposal that will result in more accidents – reports Rzeczpospolita.
Driving license for 17 years? It’s dangerous
Let us remind you that the government is proposing changes under which 17-year-olds will be able to take driving tests. If they obtain the license, they will be able to drive, but only under the supervision of another driver. He must be at least 24 years old, have a driving license for 5 years and must not be under the influence of drugs. According to experts, this is not enough to talk about safety.
The design is ill-conceived. A driving license can be given to anyone who will act responsibly on the road and not endanger their health or that of other people. 17-year-olds are not prepared for this.
– says Dr. Andrzej Markowski, transport psychologist.
In turn, the police believe that putting a 17-year-old under the care of a 24-year-old is a misunderstanding, because drivers of this age often cause accidents themselves. People aged 18-24 are most likely to be involved in dangerous road accidents. This age group has the highest rate of accidents per 10,000 people. people. In as many as 61 percent cases, accidents involving them result in death.
The government defends itself by stating that the changes were preceded by an analysis of similar regulations in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Austria. However, according to experts, the difference in training and testing of young drivers was not taken into account.
