Europeans with a disgraceful result. Will they raise our taxes for this?

The latest WHO report is sounding the alarm – Europeans drink the most alcohol in the world. What’s worse, nothing has changed in this matter over the past decade.

It turns out that Europeans have just broken another record. This time, an inglorious one. According to the latest research, the average European consumes 9.2 liters of pure spirits per year. In connection with this fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) wants to raise taxes on alcoholic beverages in this part of the world.

The European region holds the infamous record for the highest level of alcohol consumption and is struggling with the direct consequences of this fact. In the past decade, there has been no significant change in the level of alcohol consumption in the European Union countries.

– informs Dr. Gauden Galea, WHO representative.

The report is based on data from 2019. This is the latest data available to the WHO. Europe is the record holder, with North and South America in second place. The WHO report from June says that they consume about 7.5 liters of spirits per year. In the European region, men drink 14.9 liters of spirits, and women four liters. It is no wonder that alcohol is the most common cause of death in Europe. It has been calculated that there are about 800 thousand deaths due to this reason per year.

WHO calls for higher taxes

The organization calls on European governments to increase taxes on alcoholic beverages and reduce their availability.
