If you have an older version of Windows, Microsoft will force you to update. There’s no choice.
Microsoft has announced that older versions of Windows 11 will soon be updated to the newer version. The update will be automatic, which means users have little choice.
Forced Windows update
The automatic update applies to Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 21H2. The former has just entered the end of support phase, and in the case of the latter, this happened in October last year. Both releases will be automatically updated to version 23H2, which has been optional until now.
Windows 11 version 23H2, also known as Windows 11 2023 Update, is now entering a new rollout phase. We’re starting to automatically update eligible Windows 11 devices to version 23H2. This automatic update targets Windows 11 devices that have reached or are approaching end of service and is compatible with the machine learning (ML)-based training we have used so far. We will continue to train our intelligent ML model to safely deploy this new version of Windows in stages to ensure a smooth update.

Importantly, Windows 11 23H2 has the same requirements as earlier versions of the operating system. Therefore, all computers with the software installed are eligible for the update.
