The government provided forecasts for electricity prices in the second half of 2024. Poles must prepare for a significant increase in bills from July 1, although those most in need can also count on subsidies.

The current freeze on electricity prices is valid until the end of June. Until then, Poles pay a maximum of PLN 412 net per MWh, as long as consumption does not exceed the ceiling of 1,500 kWh. In the second half of the year, prices will still be frozen, but at a higher level of PLN 500 per MWh. For Poles, this means an increase in bills.

Electricity prices from July

According to the coalition government's plan, electricity prices will continue to be frozen in the second half of 2024. However, the price will increase. Instead of the current PLN 412 per MWh, we will pay PLN 500. At the same time, the consumption limit that previously amounted to 1,500 kWh will no longer apply. According to the government, if prices were not frozen, they would amount to as much as PLN 739 per MWh.

The situation is even different in the case of local government institutions, public utility entities (e.g. schools and hospitals) and small and medium-sized enterprises. In their case, the current price of PLN 693 per MWh is maintained regardless of consumption.

The government predicts that such a change will translate into higher electricity bills by up to 29%. For Poles, this means a significant increase. Therefore, another proposal is an energy voucher. Its amount will depend on the number of people in the household. The thresholds are as follows:

  • PLN 300 for single-person households
  • PLN 400 for 2-3 persons
  • PLN 500 for 4-5 people
  • PLN 600 for 6-person and larger rooms

There is also an income threshold. It amounts to PLN 2,500 for single-person households and PLN 1,700 per person for multi-person households. In this case, the “PLN for PLN” principle applies, so if someone exceeds the income limit, a voucher may be granted, but its amount will be reduced by the amount exceeded. Moreover, people who use electricity for heating (and there are apparently 5% of them) can count on double support, i.e. ranging from PLN 600 to PLN 1,200.

Applications for an energy voucher can be submitted to the commune from August 1 to September 30. There will be 60 days for its consideration. The payment is to be made in autumn or early 2025.
