Disturbing news about Nord Stream. There is new evidence
Scientists from Germany have just published disturbing reports about the Nord Stream gas pipeline. Much of the methane released during the explosion in September 2022 polluted the Baltic Sea.
As Science Daily points out, this one of the largest unnatural methane emissions in history. This is confirmed by measurements carried out by a team of researchers from the University of Gothenburg. Worse still, according to these data, most of the gas released in 2022 remained in the water.
Dissolved methane in the Baltic Sea
The Nord Stream gas pipeline exploded at the end of September 2022. The incident occurred near the island of Bornholm, at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. As scholars point out, however, much of the methane from the gas pipeline never reached the surface, but it dissolved in the salty waters of the sea. According to researchers, the scale of pollution may range from 10 to even 50 thousand tons of gas. The presence of gas in the Baltic Sea is not unusual, because it is produced as part of organic decomposition. But the amount of methane may be very disturbingwhich went into the water once.
According to a team of German scientists it is still too early to say what exact impact this increased methane level has had on biological life in the Baltic Sea. To assess this, plankton samples were taken from the contaminated area, although analyzes are still ongoing.
