ChatGPT ready to compete with Google Translate. Here’s a new tool

ChatGPT Translate is coming

OpenAI’s new standalone translation tool supports over 50 languages. But this is not the end of its advantages. It comes with AI-powered message customization. This means we can add text, say something or upload an image for translation. Then, adapt the translation to the recipient.

And although the chatbot could already be used for translations, a stand-alone tool called ChatGPT Translate is positioned as a direct competitor to Google Translate.

Easy to use, similar to Google Translate

At first glance, the new tool looks very familiar to users of Google applications. We also have two text fields – one for entering text and the other for reading it, with automatic language detection and translation support for 50 languages.

Yet there is a difference

Launched without much fanfare, ChatGPT Translate therefore offers what users expect from a basic translation service. But ChatGPT wouldn’t be itself if it didn’t stand out with something. The biggest difference is not the translation itself, but what you can do with it after displaying it.

At the bottom of the interface, users can choose from several tooltip options that allow them to change the translated text with a single click. We can therefore make the translation sound smooth, make it a bit more formal in tone, or adapt it for an academic audience, or simplify it for children. After selecting a given option, we are redirected to the main ChatGPT interface with a full response, enabling even deeper personalization.

In a word, ChatGPT allows you not only to translate a given phrase, but also to take into account its tone, context and better match it to the target group.

For now, the ChatGPT Translate website states that it does not support uploaded images. There is no support for documents, handwriting or real-time chatting yet. At the moment, ChatGPT Translate only supports plain text translation on your computer.

The beginning of the competition?

But we can be sure that this is the beginning of the development of this tool. Google still has an advantage in the field of translations, but ChatGPT heralds a different future – in which translation will not only be accurate, but more tailored to the recipient.
