Book publishers go to war with AI. They made it clear

One of the largest book publishers is going crazy with artificial intelligence. Penguin Random House has decided to officially protect itself against the influence of technology.

It’s like robots.txt but on paper

Penguin Random House, the largest book publisher in the world, declares war on artificial intelligence. From now on, new publications of the publishing house (new releases and reprints of old titles) contain the text: “no part of this book may be used or reproduced in any way for the purpose of training artificial intelligence systems or technologies”. In addition, Penguin Random House stipulates that the texts published by them cannot be used as part of the so-called data mining, co is related to the European Union directive on the use of data and texts for data mining. This is similar to the robots.txt mechanism on websites, in which website publishers ask AI companies not to scrape data.

It is the first major publishing house to include artificial intelligence on its copyright page. In August 2024 boss Penguin Random House announcedThat the company will fiercely defend the intellectual properties of its authors. However, interestingly, not every publisher has this stance – for example Oxford University PressWiley or Taylor & Francis have signed contracts with AI companies to train their algorithms on the books they publish.
