Lepiej wymontuj to z samochodu. Inaczej wezmą cię za świra

Better take it out of the car. Otherwise they'll think you're a freak

Do you like to modify your car to make it louder? Be warned, research published in Current Issues in Personality Psychology has found some clear connection between dark personality traits and the desire for a noisy car.

The research results indicated that young men with a high level of psychopathic traits were more likely to express a desire to have a noisy vehicle, including wanting to modify your car to make more noise. This discovery shed new light on a better understanding of some illegal car modifications.

The author of the research is Julie Artiken Schermer, and the pretext is a gap in existing research on this topic and the researcher's personal observations. The features that were taken into account were: Machiavellianism (strategic manipulation), narcissism and psychopathy (impulsive cruelty), as well as everyday sadism (enjoying the suffering of others).

I walk to university and am regularly surprised by loud cars with modified exhaust mufflers which, instead of muffling the sound, have the opposite effect – they scare me and other pedestrians, other drivers and animals in the area. I was curious who drives such cars

– Schermer said.

529 pupils and students were examined, including 289 men, 234 women and 6 non-binary people. The age of the respondents was 18-37 years. The study was conducted using an online survey, and students received partial course credit for participating in the research, so that they could demonstrate as much involvement as possible.

The survey consisted of three non-standard questions:

  1. My car is an extension of what makes me a cool person.
  2. I think loud cars are really cool.
  3. If I could, I would make my car louder by modifying the muffler.

The respondents answered the questions using a five-point scale.

The research results were surprising in one aspect

The average score indicated an overall low but varied interest in noisy cars. Men were more likely than women to show a preference for loud vehicles. After further analysis, this turned out to be the case people who show “callous disregard for others (indicating psychopathy) and may even take pleasure in upsetting others (sadism)“People with the trait of narcissism did not have a significant impact on the research results, although attention-seeking behavior was expected from them.

This study coincides with previous studies that showed that the personality traits examined are related to antisocial and criminal behavior.

Of course, this study also has some reservations. The sample consisted mainly of students and members of the younger generation, which may not be representative of the wider population. Other noisy vehicles such as trucks and motorcycles were also excluded from the study. But this was the first study conducted on this topic and it may be repeated on a larger scale in the future.

In the future, we will expand the project to include loud motorcycles and pickup trucks, and we also want to assess whether there is a difference between those who drive with loud music.

– Schermer announces.

As you can see, this is just the beginning. It is worth waiting for further research results, which will surprise us more than once.
