ATMs are running out of breath. Poles choose other options
Is cash becoming a thing of the past? You could say. However, it is our fault because we use it less and less.
More and more often we hear slogans that cash is becoming a thing of the past. The thing is, it happens because of our own decisions. Poles use this form of money less and less often, preferring contactless transactions. This is confirmed by data from the National Bank of Poland.
Poles do not use ATMs
Data from the National Bank of Poland show that the number of ATMs increased in the fourth quarter of 2023. Compared to the previous period, 260 machines of this type were added in Poland, thanks to which their total number increased to 22.1 thousand. In turn, there are already 12,000 devices that allow simultaneous withdrawals and deposits.
When it comes to the number of ATM transactions, there is a clear decline. In the last three months of 2023, there were a total of 149.7 million. It is worth noting that this is the sum of payments, which constitute as much as 82%. all operations and payments. This is by 2.6 million and 1.7 percent. less than in the third quarter of 2023.
The value of payments in general also decreased. In the fourth quarter, they amounted to PLN 122.3 million, which is PLN 5.3 million less. Interestingly, at the same time the average withdrawal amount increased and amounted to PLN 830. On average, just over 60 withdrawals are made per day from each ATM in Poland.
This coincides with previous information, according to which Poles are making more and more card payments, the vast majority of which are contactless transactions. As you can see, we are reluctant to use cash anymore.
