ATM pyromaniacs busted. One detail gave them away
The men from Głogów who were arrested in connection with the theft and burglary of ATMs face up to 15 years in prison. The perpetrators decided to use a completely new method of breaking in.
Police from Wielkopolska have arrested two men who have been breaking into ATMs and stealing money from them for some time. Andrzej Borowik, a junior inspector, revealed that this time the perpetrators used a different method to get into the ATM than before. Instead of a gas mixture, they used explosives. However, the police did not let themselves be fooled.
The first explosions and thefts from ATMs of this type occurred on June 20 in Zbąszyn, a similar event took place on July 26 in Dopiewo and on September 4 in Podczele, in West Pomerania. The police officers dealing with the case had surveillance footage at their disposal each time. This is how we know that they were the same perpetrators. The scheme looked similar each time – they blew up the ATM, stole money and quickly fled the scene. Each time they changed the location of the incident and their place of residence. Ultimately, the suspects were detained in Zielona Góra, where they had hidden after the last incident. The green-stained banknotes left no illusions as to their guilt.
The police seized accessories used during this type of burglary while they were detained. They also seized banknotes. They turned out to be stained because the ATM was equipped with a special security system.
– said a police spokesman.
The accused face up to 15 years in prison, although it is not yet known what the investigation will reveal, which according to police is still “developing in nature.”
The mentioned system protecting banknotes against theft it’s nothing more than banknote coloring system. Any suspicious interference with the device causes the money to be doused with paint. This is a completely safe measure that is easy to remove by the appropriate services. This requirement serves to prevent theft and is the result of a regulation of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration from 2012.
