The European Union says enough. We need to stop inundating Europe with junk goods from China. AliExpress or Shein may disappear from the consciousness of Poles forever – their profitability will be killed by customs duties.

The European Union is currently creating a plan to introduce tariffs on products imported from China via popular sales platforms such as Temu, Shein or AliExpress. The idea is limiting the supply of low-quality goodswhose prices are often even reimbursed for customers in Europe, just to grab a handful of personal data for remarketing.

Currently, for products worth up to 150 euros, a relief that exempts buyers from customs duties. But that is likely to change soon. According to the Commission, 2.3 billion products worth less than €150 have entered the EU, mostly from Chinese marketplaces such as AliExpress, Shein and Temu. Subsidized shipping costs allow Chinese sellers to deliver these goods cheaply and quickly by air.

In addition to accelerating actions aimed at limiting the inflow of low-quality goods, the European Commission also wants better monitoring of deliveries of dangerous products. In 2022-2023, the number of reports regarding unsafe toys, clothing and cosmetics increased by as much as 50%.

Orders from popular Chinese platforms they are also increasingly the subject of reports to the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection. Customer complaints include a lack of transparency in promotions (including failure to provide the lowest price in the last 30 days), misleading product reviews, unclear prices, greenwashing, and tax and duty evasion.
