Are humans dangerous to the Earth? The UN representative thunders

May was the twelfth consecutive warmest month in recorded history, Copernicus scientists said in a press release on Wednesday. A UN representative also commented on climate change, comparing people to… a meteorite.

The UN once again speaks out on climate change. This time, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed his opinion on the matter during a speech at the Natural History Museum in New York. In his speech he compared people to… a meteorite that brought destruction to the dinosaurs.

The warmest May on record

When it comes to climate, we are not dinosaurs. We are a meteorite. Not only are we in danger, but we ourselves are the danger. We are also the solution

Guterres said.

At the same time, he again called for greater efforts to limit global warming to +1.5 degrees Celsius. According to the UN representative achieving this goal “hangs in the balance”. This is confirmed, among other things, by a report published by a team of scientists led by the University of Oxford – indicates the website Naukawpolsce.pl. To achieve the intended goal CO2 reduction should be quadrupled. In the previous edition of this report, it was indicated that so far this has been achieved mainly through afforestation and translates into a result of approximately 2 billion tons of gas. Global CO2 emissions in 2023 will amount to 40 billion tons.

This also translates into the climate, as can be seen in the measurements of scientists from the Copernicus program. According to their statement, the average air temperature in May was 0.65 degrees Celsius above the average from 1991-2020. Last month was also officially the hottest May on record since 1940.
