AMD UDNA is coming. It will be a big change in the market
It’s time to say goodbye to AMD RDNA and CDNA and hello to UDNA. This should make developers’ work easier and contribute to the greater popularity of systems from the Reds.
During last week’s fair IFA 2024 in Berlin, the American editorial staff of Tom’s Hardware had the opportunity to interview AMD. Their interlocutor was Jack HuynhAMD’s senior vice president and general manager of the Computing and Graphics Business Group. He revealed a little about the Reds’ plans.
AMD UDNA is supposed to be the answer to NVIDIA CUDA
We have already informed you that Americans will no longer focus on the most efficient graphics cards from now on. In other words AMD has no intention of offering cards from the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 segment. However, this is not the end of the changes, because it is also time to say goodbye to the current architectures.
In the case of AMD, we are talking about two different architectures – RDNA for the consumer segment and CDNA for data centers. This complicates matters considerably for developers, who have a difficult task in optimizing software. The Reds want to follow in NVIDIA’s footstepsoffering a unified solution – AMD UDNA.
Additionally AMD is expected to look more into the future and plan for three generations ahead. This should translate into maintaining optimization between subsequent layouts, reducing the workload for programmers. Of course, this will take some time, and the nearest solutions will not be part of UDNA yet.
We will have to wait for more details until the official announcement of the new strategy. Either way We will probably see the first effects only in a few yearswhile what was previously called provisionally “AMD RDNA5”. So not yet with AMD Radeon RX 8000 systems.
