AI-generated wallpapers are here

Arriving in preview on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, AI-generated wallpapers are one of the new features of Android 14. Better than that: your smartphone guides you in generating the wallpaper you want. you wish.

This October 4, the Made by Google conference took place, during which Google officially presented its Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The firm also announced the publication of a stable version of Android 14 on its Pixel smartphones. Enough to see the arrival of a slew of new features, including wallpapers generated by artificial intelligence.

How AI-generated wallpapers work in Android 14

The change in Android 14 is more general than just wallpapers: personalization has been pushed one slider further. It is really on wallpapers that the innovation is the most important.

In the Android 14 wallpaper and style setting, we find this new feature. In the subsection “ Wallpaper “, there is now the option to create one ” with AI“. There, Android guides us step-by-step, first asking us to choose a theme. It can be a dark theme, a focus “gentle», a dream landscape, etc. Then, you can choose what you want to represent: a tree, a building, an object, an animal, etc. The AI then asks for a characteristic: this can be a material, a texture, etc. Finally, we can choose a color, a tone.

Each time, predefined suggestions are formulated, but it seems that we can make our ownprompt(guidelines for AI based on keywords).

There, we can finally click on “Create the wallpaper”, then wait a few seconds before seeing the result. Or rather the results, since the smartphone offers several versions of an image to allow us to choose the one we want.

All Android smartphones could benefit from it, but nothing is sure

Currently, this feature is only available on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. We can imagine that it will be extended to other Pixel smartphones compatible with Android 14 during a future quarterly update, aPixel Feature Drop. However, not all of them could be compatible: Google has not explained in detail how the AI works, but it is very likely that the images are generated by the smartphone and not by Google’s servers. So, some power would be needed to use AI.

Google also hasn’t explained whether the feature will come to all other Android smartphones, namely those it doesn’t manufacture. Some historic Pixel features are still exclusive and AI wallpapers could be one of them.

A feature that also arrives on Chromebooks

Earlier this week, Google announced a revival for Chromebooks, with the Chromebook Plus range. These are more powerful machines, which unlock exclusive features. Among them, AI generation of personalized wallpapers.

Some existing Chromebooks will move into the “More» from October 9, while new ones will soon be available from Acer, HP, Lenovo and Asus.
