A breakthrough in Google Docs. The table of contents may be hidden
Google Docs just got a valuable new feature. It will be appreciated by everyone who collects information and writes longer texts.
Tabs are better than a table of contents
This novelty is “cards” (tabs), operating, of course, independently of the pages of the document. This feature will help you categorize information in larger documents and view them conveniently without having to scroll through the entire text. The tabs in the document will behave like a table of contents on a website, and you can easily change their order and hierarchy (up to 3 levels deep).
Cards can be used to keep your document organized (for example, separate notes from the main text), divide notes into sections, prepare an outline of your work, or simply focus on one task. The sidebar with tabs also allows for very easy navigation around the document, and to make it easier, you can tag each tab with an appropriate emoji. What’s more, users can share links to specific cardswhich will facilitate team work on specific sections of the document.
The sidebar with tabs can be turned on using the button in the upper left corner of the document view. So far, this pictogram allowed you to turn on the outline view (outline), but after the update will allow you to switch between outline and tab view.
The new function was presented in April, and its implementation in Google Workspace began in October for corporate and private accounts. If you don’t have it yet, it will probably be available in the coming weeks. It is worth knowing that cards are currently only supported in the browser version of Google Docs on the desktop.
We don’t know yet when the cards will appear in full-scale mobile applications. The app for Android and iOS allows you to switch between tabs, but there is no way to edit them yet.
