iPhone is the first smartphone with NATO security certification

Success after tests in Germany

Apple devices with systems iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 can now be used to store clause data Reserved NATO. This decision was made after a detailed assessment by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). This is the first time mass-produced consumer devices have received such permissions without the need for additional software.

Until now, working with secret documents in government environments often required the use of specialized, expensive equipment. Nowadays, the iPhone and iPad have become the only mobile devices on the market that meet these standards in their basic version. The BSI audit included technical analysis of hardware, operating systems and embedded integrated circuits.

Security built into the hardware

Apple representatives indicate that it was crucial to obtain certification security design at the stage of processor production. Mechanisms such as Face ID biometric authentication and Memory Integrity Enforcement technology were deemed sufficient to protect government data. iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 are already included in the official product catalog NATO Information Assurance.

This achievement recognizes Apple for changing the traditional way of providing security. Before the advent of the iPhone, secure devices were only available to advanced government organizations and corporations after making huge investments in security mechanisms.

Apple, on the other hand, has created the world’s most secure devices for all its users, and their built-in security has now been certified to meet security requirements in NATO countries. These are the only devices of this kind in the industry.

said Ivan Krstić, Apple’s vice president of Security Engineering and Architecture

Secure digital transformation will only be successful if information security is considered from the very beginning of mobile product development. As a result of conducting an extended, rigorous BSI audit regarding the security of the iOS and iPadOS platforms and devices used in German environments operating on classified information, we are pleased to confirm the compliance of these solutions with the security requirements in force in NATO countries.

added Claudia Plattner, president of BSI

A positive result of the tests means that officials and military personnel can use the same devices that are available in stores for ordinary users.
